The black and white photographs presented in this portfolio are from the Colorado River Plateau of Utah and Arizona. This region is incredibly picturesque with such landmarks as Delicate Arch, the Grand Canyon, Bryce and Zion National Parks vying for the most photographed landscapes of the West, if not the U.S. With soaring red sandstone arches, forbidding badlands painted orange, and towering cliffs and hoodoos piecing deep blue skies, the region is made for color expression via photography. Both those same features also lend themselves very well to black and white photography or in this case, infrared photography converted to black and white. 

All of these photos were captured with avariety of infrared-sensitive cameras and converted to B&W images. Withinfrared B&W photography, skies and water can take on an inky blackness, clouds pop in dramatic fashion, and trees and brush turn milky white. Depending upon atmospheric conditions, images can be topographically sharp or soft and gauzy with a ghostly dreaminess. Whether it is a cold winter morning in Bryce, an autumn afternoon in Arches, or a hot summer day at the Wave, the Colorado Plateau can be a fascinating study for one willing to see thingsin a different light.
